Linking the Heat Pump to the Building Automation

The WAGO Automation Gateway makes it possible to intelligently retrofit heat generators from Viessmann

Efficiency is of primary importance in the building automation world. Seamless integration of different systems allows building operators to optimize resources and maximize user comfort. This also includes linking the heating technology to the management and control device.

Viessmann, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of heating and air-conditioning solutions, would also like to offer this possibility to its customers. This requires a straightforward and retrofittable solution, which enables communication between the devices and the management level in building automation systems. In search of a reliable partner for this project, Viessmann found WAGO, whose diversity and open communication systems impressed the HVAC specialists. A WAGO PFC200 was used as a gateway during this cooperation.

WAGO Automation Gateway

The WAGO Automation Gateway enables Viessmann devices to be connected to and intelligently networked with a building control system.
The Gateway functions as an interface between the device-specific CANopen^® system bus and the classic building automation communication protocols.
The connection allows users to exploit integrated building automation systems, as well as remote monitoring, remote maintenance and external control of the Viessmann heat pumps.

The project required an interface between the heat pump and the management and control device

The idea for the solution arose in 2018/19, in connection with the introduction of the new “One Base” electronic platform at Viessmann. While developing this new control platform, Viessmann sought a solution for enumerating energy meters; they found an answer, including an M-Bus application, at WAGO. The next step was to connect the devices to the management and control unit. Due to successful cooperative ventures in the past and WAGO’s ability to develop tailored solutions in a modular design, Viessmann selected WAGO as their preferred partner.

The “WAGO Automation Gateway” was created as a new application, tailored to the customer, which uses the WAGO PFC200 as a gateway. Viessmann uses CANopen^® as a system bus for its devices. However, the CANopen^® interface is almost unknown in building automation. The task was therefore clear: they required a solution to implement different gateways from CANopen^® to the well-known building automation interfaces (BACnet^®, KNX^®, Modbus^®).

The Solution: WAGO Automation Gateway as a Link between Devices and Building Automation

The WAGO Automation Gateway enables seamless, bidirectional communication between the CANopen^® system bus and the KNX^®, Modbus^® and BACnet^® protocols. It thus functions as an interface between the Viessmann devices and the building automation: The Gateway communicates directly with the heat pump via the integrated CAN interface and simultaneously enables communication with the management and control device via the KNX^®, Modbus^® and BACnet^® interfaces. This integration allows Viessmann heat generators to be integrated into nearly all building automation systems.

The Gateway can also be retrofitted into existing systems, a connection to the management and control device and their configuration is thus easily possible. Operation is intuitive via the browser and the WebVisu interface:

1. Access the WAGO Automation Gateway in WebVisu using a browser

2. Scan the connected Viessmann product

3. Transmit all data points for the Viessmann device to the Gateway

4. Transmit information to the management and control device

This allows users to seamlessly integrate their heat generators into their building automation. At the same time, remote monitoring, remote maintenance and external control of the heat generators are also possible, which allows more efficient use and management of a building’s heating technology.

During the development of the WAGO Automation Gateway, user-friendliness received particular attention, in order to make commissioning and operation easy. The software is intuitive. A unique selling point is the additional pre-filtering of relevant data points for the user. This guarantees efficiency in use.

Cooperation: WAGO and Viessmann

The WAGO Automation Gateway for Viessmann is an outstanding example of a successful partnership and an innovative solution in building automation. Due to the close cooperation between Viessmann and WAGO, a tailor-made solution was developed that addresses both Viessmann's current needs, and also promotes the sustainability of the heat generators. Viessmann particularly appreciated the WAGO’s ability to flexibly respond to individual requirements.
