Maintenance-Free WAGO Installation Connectors

Questions about the load capacity of WAGO's installation connectors are often asked. Naturally, it is our goal that our product is not damaged at the slightest exceedance of values. To approve our installation terminal blocks and connectors, we ensure they are maintenance-free according to BS 5733. Maintenance-free means that the connectors do not need to be accessible and can be installed, e.g., in the wall. Important prerequisites are that they must not be screw connectors. Also, no additional devices like switches or fuses can be part of the connector.

Why do we use a local standard to prove maintenance-free characteristics? The tests in the standard simulate extreme scenarios that may occur when using a connector.

Vibration Test: In everyday life, we may not notice many vibrations, such as those from public transport or environmental influences. A connector installed in a wall for several decades can be affected by these influences. The vibration test ensures that the connectors can withstand these conditions.

Electrical Load Testing: Various electrical loads can occur. The connectors are operated at maximum rated current for 1500 hours to ensure that even prolonged loads do not lead to connector failure. When using multiple devices, combined with sluggish fuses, increased loads can occur. To test this, the connectors are operated at twice the rated current for 90 minutes. To check high peak loads, the connector is subjected to 120 A per mm² conductor cross-section for one second. For a maximum of 4 mm², this corresponds to 480 A.
