Lighting Scenes with Digital Multiplex (DMX)

The DMX function enables lighting control applications and greater versatility.

WAGO's serial interface module is compatible with this protocol and can be operated as both a DMX master and slave. This flexibility supports the implementation of versatile solutions.

The WAGO DMX Solution:

  • Application solution based on the 75x-652 RS-485/232 Module

  • Use DMX telegram data as process data for the WAGO 750 I/O-SYSTEM

  • Data transmission rate 250 kBaud, one start and two stop bits

  • Connect DMX devices to the WAGO 750 I/O-SYSTEM via DMX library

DMX is a protocol used to control lighting.

The Digital Multiplex (DMX) protocol originated in the theatre and events industry to control intelligent lighting equipment and special effects devices. DMX is also increasingly being used in commercial buildings for applications including RGB, color and light temperature control.

In these buildings, light is frequently used as a design element, such as for effects and architecture lighting, facade lighting and to accent special architectural features. The protocol focuses on modern LED technology, which is used for special lighting effects because it is efficient and provides a dazzling array of colors.

DMX System Features

DMX is based on the RS-485 serial interface standard. Typically, three-pole XLR plugs are used for cable connections.

DMX Master

  • Writing DMX telegrams from the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM to DMX devices (e.g., switching, dimming, LED light color control)
  • DMX transmitter for 1 to 512 channels

DMX Slave

  • Reading DMX telegrams for further processing in the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM (e.g., switching hall illumination from DMX light control console)
  • 21 DMX channels (process image size = 24)
  • Selection of any address range from the entire DMX address range through an adjustable start channel (WAGO-I/O-CHECK as of Version 3.10.8)

RS-232/485 (750-652 / 753-652) Serial Interface

This serial interface module connects RS‐485/422 or RS-232 interface devices to the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750. It also provides gateways between the serial interface and the fieldbus systems supported by the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750.
