Simple, Fast and Reliable Wiring in Hazardous Locations

Leverage for the toughest applications: WAGO's light gray 221 Series now defies explosive atmospheres, creating entirely new design possibilities for hazardous areas – particularly for the manufacturers of junction boxes, terminal boxes, lights or electronic devices.

Pull the lever up, insert a conductor, push the lever down – termination can be that simple, even for Ex applications. Just in time for the Hanover Industrial Fair (HMI), WAGO is presenting its electrician-trusted 221 Series as an all-purpose connector for hazardous areas. The 221 Series Ex Connectors carry type protection “e” for increased safety and can be used in Zones 1 and 2.

Easy Termination for All Conductor Types

The levers can be easily opened by hand, conductors inserted and the levers pushed back down. The 221’s 4 mm² variant accommodates fine-stranded conductors from 0.14 to 4 mm², as well as solid and stranded conductors from 0.2 to 4 mm² (24–12 AWG). The 221's 6 mm² variant connects solid, stranded and fine-stranded conductors ranging from 0.5 to 6 mm² (20–10 AWG).

Connector Position in the Carrier Determines Maximum Working Voltage

The 2-, 3- and 5-wire connectors can be easily inserted into WAGO’s matching mounting carrier. The carrier fulfills the normative requirement for securing the clamping point. When the connectors are placed close together in the carrier, the working voltage is 275 V. For applications with working voltages up to 440 V, the connectors are inserted so that a spacer is visible between each connector. These spacers comply with the required clearances and creepage distances for working voltages up to 440 V in accordance with the standard. 

Flexible (Re)Wiring Despite Carrier

The carrier can either be clamped onto a mounting rail or screwed tightly to any smooth surface. Even when the connector is currently installed in a carrier, conductors can be connected and disconnected. A typical scenario would be if only individual conductors had to be rewired, giving the 221 Series a decisive advantage for applications in Ex areas. This is because conventional distribution boxes for Ex applications are equipped with jacket clamps, which make it difficult to loosen individual conductors.
