Success for Generations: Environmental Protection at WAGO

At WAGO, we see environmental protection as more than just following environmental protection regulations.

Our commitment to the environment is our motivation for implementing new ideas, concepts and technologies throughout the entire service life of our products. We support our employees and business partners in this endeavor too. At the same time, we are a solutions provider with a wide range of products and support our customers’ efficient energy management.

On All Levels:

Environmental management on the company level

Company growth also leads to higher consumption of resources. We recognize that the economic success of our company also depends on achieving environmental goals. As a manufacturer, we support developments that contribute to environmental protection. We always track individual material flows along the value added chain, because we view raw materials, product design, production, and consumption as parts of the whole. We strive to close cycles and save resources.

With our environmental and energy management system certified according to DIN EN ISO 14001 and DIN EN ISO 50001, we ensure that national and international requirements are observed in every branch of our company, and that environmental protection considerations are involved in all company processes. In addition, WAGO makes other environmental protection efforts that extend beyond the ISO requirements. These include, for example, employee actions in the field of waste prevention or our energy scouts. Additional examples include: plastic and water treatment, raw material conservation in production and packaging materials, the use of recycled paper across the entire company, the introduction of charging stations for e-vehicles, and the use of waste heat in production processes.

Environmental management on the product level

Environmental protection on the product level plays a significant role in WAGO’s sustainable environmental management. We give high priority to ensuring adherence to substance prohibitions/limitations worldwide (e.g., REACH, RoHS). Further information about REACH and ROHS can be found on our ”Environmental Product Compliance Search” page.

RoHS – Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances

These are EU directives that regulate the use of hazardous substances in equipment and components. In addition to reducing impacts on people and the environment, the regulations’ goal is to improve recycling capabilities. WAGO closely monitors RoHS developments and reacts to any changes in these requirements promptly. Further information about ROHS can be found on our ”Environmental Product Compliance Search” page.

REACH – Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals

REACH is an EU regulation (No. 1907/2006) that was enacted on 2007-06-01 and since then has been a valid legal basis for all EU member states. To protect human health and the environment, this EU chemical regulation aims to classify and identify all chemicals and their effects.

The REACH regulation also assigns specific duties to every participant in the supply chain. The products WAGO manufactures are subject to the regulation. However, “articles” as defined in the regulation are not subject to registration, so WAGO usually assumes the role of a downstream user in the supply chain. Therefore, WAGO has a duty to inform subsequent links along the supply chain according to REACH Regulation Article 33. Naturally, WAGO takes this duty seriously.

More information regarding our duty to communicate information under Article 33 can be found on our “REACH SVHC Declaration” page at the following link:

European laws such as REACH and RoHS require information to be provided about restricted substances in products. This information must be passed on by the manufacturers and vendors in the supply chain. By using BOMcheck, WAGO meets this product-level environmental protection challenge successfully and efficiently.

BOMcheck is a centralized database for the declaration of substances. This compliance tool is designed specifically to allow manufacturers and suppliers to efficiently create well-structured substance declarations that comply with REACH, RoHS and other regulations concerning the limitation of substances. This Internet database system enhances data quality for environmental protection on the product level.

WEEE – Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment

The WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU regulates the take-back and recycling of electrical and electronic devices. Manufacturers and importers of electrical and electronic devices are obliged register as “WEEE producers” and to comply with the reporting and take-back requirements. We have always taken adherence to the WEEE regulations very seriously – it’s in our own interest, but we recognize that it benefits our customers as well.

Only a few of our projects fall under the purview of the WEEE Directives and the Member State Implementation Laws. We have marked these products as WEEE-compliant wherever such a mark is required by law (which is not uniformly mandated for the B2B sector across all of Europe).

Less Is More: Our Packaging

Recyclability drives the selection of our packaging materials. All packaging used by WAGO can be recycled and fed back into the economic cycle without any prior preparation. In addition to recycling, we prioritize reductions in the use of raw materials. For this reason, our cartons are made with up to 80 % recycled paper content and are provided with the RESY symbol. The RESY symbol guarantees compliance with the packaging regulation for transport packaging. Appropriately enough, the designation is indicated by partial perforations – this method enables ink-free printing of WAGO cartons, which prevents unnecessary environmental impacts.
