New Brilliance for the Stadiums of Tomorrow

Following general renovations started in August 2020, the Helsinki Olympic Stadium now gleams with new light – literally. The SIRIUS® floodlight fixtures from SITECO, a lighting manufacturer, are responsible for this change. The company from Traunreut in Upper Bavaria, which is known for its tradition of quality, has set a new standard with these floodlights, now in use in stadiums around the world. SITECO integrates quality holistically. Because of this, the company relies on high-grade lighting connection technology from WAGO, which can be easily and intuitively operated due to the levers.

The SIRIUS® floodlight fixtures from SITECO will clearly spotlight future major events at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium – both for the 36,000 spectators in the stadium and the millions watching on their TVs. The especially precise lighting control is achieved through high-efficiency silver reflectors. Specialized Cut-Off variants trim superfluous light scatter and, at 96 points on the “Television Lighting Consistency Index” (TLCI), focus it precisely where it is needed – down into the arena, instead of up at the night sky.

Connecting Function, Lighting Quality and Efficiency

“The SIRIUS® floodlight fixture exceeds the requirements of the large governing bodies in sports, like FIFA and UEFA in soccer/football or IAAF in Track and Field. It offers excellent lighting quality at low current consumption, and also commands DMX controlled, dynamic light scenes,” states Michaela Plank, Product Manager at SITECO. In the times of Ultra HD and 8K, SIRUIS® offers an ideal foundation for exciting moments in sports that includes flicker-free lighting for super slow motion viewing. This is also confirmed by Tero Männikkö, Project Manager for the city of Helsinki, “The main benefits of the new lighting solution are improved light output, lighting quality and energy efficiency.”

Consistent quality – Inside and Outside

The one is quality that you can see. The second important factor in quality is somewhat hidden, deep inside the SIRIUS® power supply unit. In order for the spotlights to flood arenas, like the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, with light, they must have supply units. “It forms the core of the floodlight. It generates 2000 watts of LED output and distributes it on the light sail, as per customer request,” explains Mathias Loipfinger, electronics designer at SITECO. This makes the use of high-quality, reliable connection technology even more important, specifically maintenance-free and vibration-proof. “WAGO offers this, and over the entire lifespan of the LED floodlight.” The Wire-to-Board connectors of the 2604 Series, which are installed in the floodlights, function for the mains-side connection at the customer’s location and also to terminate installation cables during remote assembly of the supply unit.
