Prevent Explosions Reliably

How can explosions be prevented, which Ex zones exist, and which products can be used safely in which zone? In our video, Benjamin Böhm, Global Industry Manager for Mechanical Engineering at WAGO, explains the basics of explosion protection.

Ex Zone Classification (EN/IEC/UL 60079-0 etc.)

The zone model classifies locations according to the hazard they present into Ex zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas atmospheres, 20, 21 and 22 for dust atmospheres and M1 and M2 for mines at risk of firedamp.

As part of a risk analysis, the system operator needs to assess how often and for how long explosive atmospheres can occur in different areas of the system. The system must be classified into these Ex protection zones accordingly. Zones 0 and 20 are the most hazardous zones.

Overview of Ex Zones

In our overview, you can find basic information about the Ex zones, including their classifications and the specific safety requirements that apply to each area.

Zone 0

A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is present continuously or for long periods or frequently

Zone 1

A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air or flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally

Zone 2

A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if one does occur, it will persist for a short period only

Zone 20

A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is present continuously, or for long periods or frequently

Zone 21

A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally

Zone 22

A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if one does occur, it will persist for a short period only

Certifications

ATEX – European Directive

ATEX is a European directive that sets requirements on equipment and protective systems used in hazardous areas. It ensures that products are designed and tested to allow safe operation in these environments.

CCCEx – for Use of Explosion Protection Products in China

Since 2020, CCC certification, which applies to certain explosion-proof products, has been valid for the Chinese market. This certification must be presented in order for the products in question to be imported into China and sold and operated there.

EAC Ex – Regulatory Framework in Eurasian Economic Union Territory

EAC Ex is a certification for the use of devices in hazardous areas which is valid in the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). This certification ensures that the products meet the regional safety requirements.

INMETRO – Certification for Brazil

The INMETRO certificate is issued by Brazil and applies to devices and components used in hazardous areas. The certification is required for products on the Brazilian market, as well as imports.

IECEx – the Global Certification System

IECEx is an international process for the certification of equipment used in hazardous areas. The goal of the IECEx scheme is to harmonize national and international Ex standards.

UL

Underwriters Laboratories is an independent organization which tests the safety of products according to applicable US product safety requirements.

ABS

ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) certifies products that meet stringent safety and quality standards for marine use, ensuring their reliability in demanding maritime environments.

DNV (Det Norske Veritas)

DNV (Det Norske Veritas) tests and certifies products to ensure that they meet the strict safety requirements and quality standards of the shipbuilding industry. This certification ensures that the products can withstand the extreme conditions found at sea and meet the quality standards required for use on ships.

KC Ex Certification

The KC Ex certification is issued in South Korea and adheres to the country's safety standards for explosion protection.

Explosion Protection in North America – NEC, CEC, UL, ANSI/ISA and CSA

In North America, technologies and systems have developed in the area of explosion protection for electrical equipment and systems that differ significantly from the IEC technology. The NEC applies in the US and the CEC in Canada. The areas where differences arise include the classification of explosive areas, the design of equipment and the installation of electrical systems.

UKCA Mark

UKCA marking was introduced for the United Kingdom as part of the Brexit process. It applies to the import of certain products into the United Kingdom.
