Enhance Grid Communication and Power Management

WAGO’s Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Controller is a CODESYS 3.5 library function block with a control algorithm for real and reactive power control as a function of voltage and frequency at DER sites. Connecting DERs to the grid requires communication between the energy resource and the grid operator to ensure a reliable power system. DERs refer to small-to-medium sized power generation and energy storage systems. Generally these DERs are composed of renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, and battery energy storage. They can be installed in buildings and communities that are tied to the area’s electric power systems. Standards such as IEEE 1547-2018 are being adopted to help provide a trouble-free connection between these systems and the power grid. The WAGO DER controller function block, which has been validated and verified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory, supports Clause 5 - Reactive power capability and voltage/power control requirements. It also reinforces Clause 10 - Interoperability, information exchange, information models, and protocols.

Benefits:

  • Scalability – Can be used in multiple controllers depending on the application.

  • Programmed with CODESYS 3.5 software and can be used for a 30-day trial period at no cost.

  • Direct communication with grid operators and DER assets without the need for protocol converters.

Distributed Energy Resource Controllers

WAGO’s IEEE 1547‑2018 compliant DER Controller integrates directly into WAGO PLCs and is programmed with CODESYS 3.5 for active and reactive power management. Setpoints adjust dynamically through utility‑grade communication protocols, including IEEE 2030.5 (CSIP), DNP3, SunSpec Modbus, and IEC 61850. This helps support reliable coordination with grid operators and ensures smooth integration into utility‑scale DER deployments, microgrid controllers, and smart inverter ecosystems that require standards‑driven interoperability.

Distributed Energy Resource Controller Library

The WAGO DER Controller Library includes ready‑to‑use visualization templates for fast development of web‑based DER dashboards, accessible through any browser connected to the DER Controller network. These tools simplify configuration, monitoring, and optimization of DER interconnection requirements, enabling efficient deployment across solar, storage, hybrid power, and FERC Order 2222–aligned DER integrations.
