Added Value out of the Box

With its IoT box, Liebherr has devised an infrastructure that creates added value from production data for many application areas. The core is a WAGO Controller: The PFC200 enables the connection of any system and machinery. This ensures maximum flexibility. With this new infrastructure, Liebherr can optimize existing processes and set up new business models – while being prepared for future opportunities and challenges.

Welding robots are an indispensable manufacturing technology for Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger GmbH. The company from Kirchdorf an der Iller (Upper Swabia) is the world's market leader in mobile excavators. But they can do even more: The robots, like all industrial systems and machines, also produce many kinds of data. Drawing on this source makes it possible to increase value creation and efficiency – not only in manufacturing, but also in many other fields of activity, in financial controlling and maintenance, as well as in IT management or purchasing.

However, this assumes that the relevant data can be read from the systems and machines, consolidated, analyzed and linked to other data. Liebherr IT-Services GmbH has now created a powerful, scalable infrastructure for all these tasks: a compact, modular IoT box, which, when installed near the respective system or machine, receives the data via a network cable, processes it on site, evaluates it and makes it available to higher-level systems such as PLM or MES.

« Une solution pour un large éventail de domaines spécialisés »

Cela fait de l'IoT Box une « solution pour un large éventail de domaines spécialisés », déclare Handeck, « quelle que soit la perspective sous laquelle on considère un système ou une machine ». Il cite comme exemple concret les tambours de fil de soudage qui alimentent les systèmes de robots de soudage en matériau. « Nous pouvons désormais installer une balance et la connecter à la IoT Box. Les employés du système ont ainsi une vision claire de la quantité de fil restante dans les tambours, ce qui leur permet d'approvisionner les machines en temps voulu », explique l'expert. Il serait également possible de mettre automatiquement les données de consommation à la disposition du service des achats. Cela réduirait la charge de travail de nos collègues de la production.

De plus, la IoT Box peut créer un tout nouveau modèle commercial pour cette tâche. « Nous pourrions transmettre les données à un prestataire qui veillerait alors à ce que le système soit alimenté de manière fiable en fil à souder sans que les employés aient à intervenir dans le service de production ou des achats », explique Handeck. « Cela permet un gain d'efficacité considérable! »

Grâce à la IoT Box, Liebherr peut non seulement optimiser les processus existants. L'entreprise se prépare également aux opportunités et aux défis futurs. Grâce à cette infrastructure, Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger GmbH et les autres usines Liebherr disposent désormais d'une base informatique sur laquelle elles peuvent développer et mettre en œuvre des modèles commerciaux futurs auxquels personne ne pense aujourd'hui.

WAGO rend les solutions autonomes obsolètes

Au cœur de la IoT Box se trouve un contrôleur PFC 200 de WAGO. Il enregistre toutes les données pertinentes du système ou de la machine, ainsi que celles des capteurs des périphériques qui ne sont pas enregistrées par le système de commande de la machine. « Si la connectivité de base du PFC200 n'est pas suffisante, il peut être facilement complété par des modules supplémentaires ou des coupleurs de bus du système d'E/S modulaire de WAGO », explique Matthias Morath, consultant en innovation PLM chez Liebherr IT-Services. Il est ainsi possible de connecter pratiquement n'importe quel système à l'infrastructure, quels que soient son fabricant et son âge, sans frais importants. C'est un avantage considérable, en particulier pour les entreprises disposant d'une large gamme de produits, comme c'est le cas de Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger GmbH. Cela évite les solutions isolées : « Grâce à la flexibilité du contrôleur, nous n'avons pas à mettre en place un système distinct pour chaque tâche de numérisation », précise l'expert.

Les données sont harmonisées selon un modèle défini directement sur le PFC200. « En raison de l'hétérogénéité des systèmes et des machines connectés, il est plus efficace de le faire directement sur le contrôleur », explique Morath. On utilise soit un programme API, soit un micro-service qui s'exécute comme un conteneur Docker personnalisé sur le produit WAGO. « Au final, l'avantage est que le service informatique peut maintenir et orchestrer le logiciel dans le monde entier à l'aide d'un outil standard et le perfectionner en fonction de nouveaux cas d'utilisation », explique Morath. À l'aide de protocoles tels que MQTT, les données harmonisées sont ensuite transférées vers les systèmes de niveau supérieur sur un serveur ou dans un nuage, par exemple pour la maintenance prédictive ou le PLM. Il serait bien sûr également possible d'importer les données brutes non harmonisées dans les systèmes.

Pourquoi l'entreprise Liebherr a-t-elle décidé de faire confiance à WAGO pour une application aussi centrale? « Les deux entreprises ont un point commun très important : ce sont des entreprises familiales de technologie qui s'engagent dans des investissements à long terme pour leurs produits », explique Morath. « Tout comme Liebherr, WAGO met l'accent sur le client et ses besoins. Cela se remarque à tous les niveaux, tant au niveau du service que de la technologie. » Bien entendu, Liebherr a également établi des critères très stricts pour le matériel et les logiciels lors du processus de sélection. « Les services de WAGO se sont clairement démarqués de la concurrence », rapporte-t-il.

Infrastructure progressivement étendue

À ce jour, cinq IoT Box ont été mis en place, tous chez Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger GmbH. « Nous étendons progressivement cette infrastructure », affirme Handeck. La boîte fabriquée par Liebherr IT-Services sur un site à Oberopfingen, en Souabe, est également à la disposition des autres usines Liebherr. De plus, Liebherr coopère avec sa IoT Box au sein du « European 4.0 Transformation Center » (E4TC) de la RWTH Aachen, où l'université effectue un essai de technologie pour la mise en œuvre de stratégies de numérisation en collaboration avec des partenaires renommés issus de l'industrie et de la recherche. En association avec une machine de découpe laser, Liebherr souhaite démontrer ici les domaines d'application possibles de la boîte et poursuivre son développement.
