The Standard in Lighting Control – DALI

Lighting control with DALI – The “Digital Addressable Lighting Interface” (DALI) is a communication protocol for building lighting applications and is used for communication between lighting control devices, such as electronic ballasts, brightness sensors or motion detectors.

DALI Explained Simply

The manufacturer-independent DALI standard, defined in IEC 62386, ensures interoperability of electronic control gear in digitally controllable lighting systems, such as transformers and power dimmers. This standard replaces the commonly used analog 1–10 V dimmer interface.

The DALI-2 standard, published under IEC 62386, not only defines control gear but also specifies requirements for control devices — including our DALI Multi-Master Module.

Building Lighting Control: DALI-2 Applications

The DALI protocol is used in building automation to control individual luminaires and lighting groups. Assigning luminaires to operating elements and grouping is performed using short addresses. A DALI master can control a line with up to 64 devices, each assignable to 16 groups and 16 scenes. Thanks to bidirectional data exchange, not only switching and dimming but also status messages can be transmitted from the operating unit back to the controller.

DALI maximizes flexibility by enabling lighting control to adapt to new conditions — such as changes in room layout or usage — via software, without requiring hardware modifications. Lighting assignments and groupings can also be adjusted after installation without rewiring. In addition, advanced DALI controllers can be integrated into higher-level controllers and connected to a complete building automation system via bus systems such as KNX®, BACnet, or Modbus®.

DALI Multi-Master Module
(Item No. 753-647)

The 12 mm-wide DALI Multi-Master Module (Item No. 753-647) is certified to the DALI-2 standard IEC 62386 and supports up to 64 DALI actuators (electronic control gear) as well as up to 16 multi-sensors (maximum of 64 sensor addresses). This eliminates the need to sensor-only parallel buses for brightness measurement and/or motion detection — saving both time and money. Commissioning and management of DALI networks have also been significantly simplified. Installation time is reduced, and the network structure is clearer — making DALI use more cost-effective than ever.

Each DALI actuator can be assigned to 16 groups and 16 scenes. The DALI Multi-Master Module also offers 16 additional virtual groups on the DALI bus.

DALI Power Supply
(Item Number 753-620)

WAGO offers two options for supplying DALI modules, allowing customers to choose the most cost-effective solution. A 12 mm-wide module (DALI Multi-Master DC/DC Converter, Item No. 753-620) is recommended for a single DALI module with 200 mA. If several DALI modules are operated on one controller, an external 230 V power supply for DIN-35 rail with an output current of 1100 mA (Switched-Mode Power Supply, Item No. 787-1007 for DALI Multi-Master Modules Item No. 753-647) is the ideal choice.

DALI Sensors (Item Number 2851-8xxx)

WAGO has added multi-sensors for the Multi-Master Module (Item Number 753-647) to its DALI product range for detecting movement and brightness. The sensors are available in two versions: one, a multi-sensor kit consisting of a ceiling sensor, a sensor coupler that serves as the interface to the DALI network and an assembly kit; the other with a directly integrated connection to the DALI bus for surface mounting, as well as for ceiling and socket installation.

The new presence and brightness sensors enable WAGO to offer one-stop shopping across its automation levels for universal DALI lighting solutions. The user can therefore be certain that the components used will be completely compatible with each other. Added to this is the user-friendly configuration of the entire DALI network, which WAGO provides with the DALI Configurator's graphical user interface.

DALI Configurator

The free DALI Configurator is a graphical interface for configuring and commissioning the DALI Multi-Master Module (Item Number 753-647) and the DALI network. The configurator is available as a stand-alone Windows application or for use with WAGO-I/O-CHECK software. It provides the following functions: easy commissioning, configuration, service, support and maintenance of a DALI network.

Key features of the software include a simplified project overview, optimized device addressing, efficient batch processing, and comprehensive data backup and restore functionality.

Compact Controller with DALI (Item Number 751-9403)

The WAGO Compact Controller 100 with DALI is the ideal solution for applications requiring integrated lighting control. It enables direct connection and control of DALI lights without an additional gateway.

The integrated DALI Multi-Master Module is certified according to the DALI-2 standard IEC 62386 and acts as a DALI application controller. In addition to controlling lights (electronic control gear), sensors such as presence or brightness sensors can be directly integrated. This eliminates the need for additional bus systems, keeping the entire DALI installation clearly structured and easy to maintain.
