Secure Connections at Sea

TOSIBOX® from Finland has developed an easily configurable monitoring solution that includes a high level of security. It has what it takes to establish new standards in ship-to-land communications.

Shipping companies that hope to charter well-trained and motivated crew members have to offer something extra in the era of social media. This means, for example, that crew need to be able to Skype with distant family, or use Facebook to remain in contact while at sea. Bandwidth is not the problem here: thanks to satellite coverage focused on most major trade routes, Internet access is available at reasonable costs.

Good connections also help with many other aspects of Maritime 4.0. There is currently no difficulty in receiving ship data on land from remote ocean locations. The problem is no longer whether we can communicate, but instead how to securely establish communication between those on board and the outside world. The Finnish company, TOSIBOX®, has created good conditions for this with their ”TOSIBOX® Lock for Container” software tool. User can access the Internet and most LAN and WAN networks on their industrial IoT devices via an encrypted VPN connection. “Ships can be monitored around the clock with complete security,” explains Jörn Krimpenfort, Business Development Manager at TOSIBOX®.

Use Applications More Quickly with Docker®

The interaction between the “TOSIBOX® Lock for Container” and the WAGO PFC200 Controller with Docker® technology functions particularly well. Both companies have developed a solution that optimally unites the strengths of the software and WAGO Automation Technology. While TOSIBOX® guarantees the highest security level, the Linux®-based container technology of the Docker offers other advantages; for example: Applications can be used more easily and faster on the PFC200 and different applications can run independently of one another on one device. These diverse possibilities during the development and use of applications are a real winner in ship operations, as the interdependencies on board are becoming increasingly more complex: more and more process data, which, for example, is relevant for monitoring efficiency and climate protections, has to be intelligently linked and made usable.

In addition, Docker provides users with many degrees of freedom, in particular, you can use third-party software, explains Krimpenfort. Demand continues to increase for open automation platforms that permit this. “There is a completely new scene taking place in application development. The young guns don’t want a restrictive programming environment,” according to the TOSIBOX® manager.

Perfect Basis for Analyses

TOSIBOX® and WAGO are providing the infrastructure so that components in an automated system, for example, controllers, operating units, or condition monitoring systems, can be monitored, analyzed, and also optimized at higher levels. In order to accomplish this, the “TOSIBOX® Lock for Container” and the WAGO PFC200 use the Docker to easily establish a secure connection between the devices – for example, components in machine areas or for system monitoring on site – and higher-level streaming or storage services, as well as tools for data analysis. This can also include visualizations or solutions that involve machine learning.

In addition to ensuring secure data transmission, the essential added value of the overall solution lies in the ability it grants to users, who can now easily access various systems and devices. According to Jörn Krimpenfort, the hardware for connecting devices is virtually irrelevant: there are keys for the TOSIBOX® in the form of USB drives for processors, softkeys for laptops, and mobile clients for tablets and smartphones. “In summary, this structure represents an elegant solution that is easy to implement in order to intelligently connect process data using a secure VPN connection.”

Outlook
