A Collaboration among Neighbors for Smart Production

Porta Westfalica/Minden 2021-05-18: – Green and Red, WAGO and BERNSTEIN. East Westphalia is known as a center of innovation, and when two companies headquartered there pool their expertise, their industrial customers are bound to benefit. In this case, the SMART Safety System from BERNSTEIN communicates with WAGO controllers, providing customers all the data and information on their production processes quickly in a clearly organized digital form – for example, on an HMI or through a Web browser.

The collaboration between the two companies came into being in 2019 as part of the “Production and IT” trade fair in Nordhorn. As a provider of system solutions for process and industrial automation, WAGO is always looking for new ideas and innovation for its customers. In this context, reading out and further processing data and information on safety technology components via IO-Link was an interesting approach – and an option that WAGO controllers already offer. BERNSTEIN has also taken this approach to data processing via IO-Link for some time now with its SMART Safety system for protecting machines and systems. Thus was created the interface for collaboration between the two companies.

“BERNSTEIN supplies the safety technology for protecting machines and systems, as well as the associated data. WAGO brings the expertise in controllers for digitizing and automating processes. Together, we offer customers an all-round carefree package from the combined know-how of the two companies, bundled in one complete system,” says Philip Aumann, Head of Product Management at BERNSTEIN.

Safety Technology from BERNSTEIN

BERNSTEIN introduced the first component of a SMART Safety system back in 2017: the SRF (Safety RFID) touchless safety sensor. The SRF monitors movable protective devices, such as flaps, doors and guards. This sensor is especially small and protects employees from injury by switching off machines and systems, or preventing them from even starting up, if the protective device is not closed properly.

The next step was the Safety Emergency Unit – SEU for short – an electrical solution for integrating an emergency stop switch into the SRF sensor series circuit. Together with the SCR DI safety relay, these three components form a complete package for intelligent protection of machines and systems. This is because, in the development phase, BERNSTEIN focused particularly on the patented DCD diagnostic system, which provides comprehensive data about each connected device. The daisy-chain diagnostic system provides a wide range of information to make machines and systems more efficient by avoiding downtime. The data for each component of the safety chain is read out and provided via IOLink .

IO-Link is the first globally standardized I/O technology (IEC 61131-9) for communication with both sensors and actuators. Its powerful peer-to-peer communication is based on the well-established 3-wire sensor/actuator connection and places no additional demands on the cable material. IO-Link is thus not a fieldbus, but rather the next step in the development of existing tried-and-tested connection technology for sensors and actuators. These features make the technology ideal for transmitting diagnostic information from the BERNSTEIN SMART Safety System to the WAGO controller.

Control Components from WAGO

The WAGO controllers of the modular WAGO I/O System further process the safety technology data and deliver it to the customer’s screen in a scalable, user-friendly way. Besides network and fieldbus interfaces, they support all digital input/output modules, analog input/output modules and specialty modules of the 750/753 Series. Two ETHERNET interfaces and an integrated switch allow line and star topology wiring. An integrated Webserver provides user configuration options and status information on the controller and application. In addition to the process industry and building automation, typical applications can be found in the mechanical engineering industry.

Together, we offer customers an all-round carefree package from the combined know-how of the two companies, bundled in one complete system.

The Collaboration

BERNSTEIN provides the DCD diagnostic data via IO Link ; this data is then provided to users in the WAGO controller in a user-friendly form with the help of an e!COCKPIT library developed for the BERNSTEIN system. Both companies worked to develop such a library for the WAGO controller family: “It provides support for rapid commissioning of the BERNSTEIN system with the WAGO controller,” says Philip Aumann.

In addition to the function block required for communication, the library also contains a ready-made visualization for customers to use. Customers can also use the diagnostic information in their own visualizations.

The close collaboration between the two companies creates added value for customers. WAGO customers who already use the machine controller can now take advantage of diagnostic data with the help of BERNSTEIN. Conversely, BERNSTEIN customers can integrate the WAGO controller into the SMART Safety System to protect their machines. Contact representatives are available at both companies. Their proximity to each other in North Rhine-Westphalia – with BERNSTEIN in Porta Westfalica and WAGO in Minden – makes communication between the two companies even easier. “The result is an all-round carefree solution that incorporates the combined knowledge of the two companies,” says Philip Aumann in summary.

Pioneering Communication with IO-Link

IO-Link is the flexible interface for data acquisition on the field level. This open communication standard allows a seamless data flow from the sensor level to the control level. This makes configuration and cabling considerably simpler.
