Interview
New Digital Platform Team Leader
Nils Homburg

He studied economics in Hanover, but began working intensively on software development in the area of Web apps/e-commerce in 2000 when he founded his first company.

So he's an IT guy at heart and is still involved in software development in his private life. After a brief interlude in retail, he moved to Jungheinrich AG in 2012 and held various positions in Group IT – including as an SAP in-house consultant, project manager, solution architect and finally, group manager in SAP/Cloud applications and mobile apps. He first worked for us in the Digital Transformation Office before moving back to IT as head of the newly founded “New Digital Platform” team.

Why the transition from the Digital Transformation Office (DTO) to IT?
After two exciting years in the DTO staff department with a strong strategic focus, it is time for me to return to my roots. Before joining WAGO, I worked in various positions in corporate IT, including as an IT project manager and solution architect. I now have the opportunity to contribute to WAGO IT and to share my experience, particularly in the cloud computing environment and comprehensive IT solution architectures.
What are the benefits of switching?
In my opinion, the change to WAGO IT goes hand in hand with the practical implementation of the strategic topics from the DTO. Specifically, this means that I now have the opportunity to help shape the technological basis for implementing the “digital agenda,” such as the platform economy. This is also where I see the core of the new “New Digital Platform” team. The aim is to provide a modern, service-oriented platform for the realization of many small and also large building blocks of digital transformation. To this end, colleagues in IT have built up an excellent foundation in recent years, e.g., the introduction of container technology and the connection of public cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure. We are now building on this and developing the technological platform together.
What was your greatest milestone while working at the DTO?
For me personally, there were two major milestones that are also directly related to the new task in IT: the adoption of the enterprise cloud strategy and the formulation of a strategy for the platform economy in the it's OWL Leading-Edge Cluster research project “Digital Business.” The platform strategy helps orient us when setting up new, data-based business models, but also for expanding existing business models/processes with digital services. At the same time, the Enterprise Cloud strategy tells us how we can sensibly use cloud technologies for this. The topics are inextricably interlinked and are reflected in the “New Digital Platform” approach.
What tasks/challenges await you in your new position?
One example is the establishment of a “Cloud Competence Center” together with the neighboring IT groups. This involves establishing an overarching, virtual team, in which we bundle the necessary expertise for setting up and operating cloud solutions. This is because it is already foreseeable that cloud solutions will be increasingly in focus and IT is already an important part of this development today. Another challenge is the increasing penetration of IT with so-called microservices, i.e., the provision of distributed, small-scale services that, for example, map a business process in their entirety. This raises questions about service monitoring and availability, interplay in business processes, and also questions about the growing heterogeneity of the technology used.
What are you looking forward to most?
To my colleagues on my team and in IT as a whole – and the many challenging issues we'll be working on together.
